Research And Quoting

You don’t have too many quotes in your paper as we’ll talk about in a couple minutes here and this is just a practical tip always make sure you write down that page number I’ve had some problems recently when in trying to write my doctoral dissertation where I took some notes and I really wanted to include that information in my paper and I knew what book it was from but I didn’t know what page it was on and I forgot to include that with and I use MLA with MLA and also turabian it’s really really important to make sure you know what page you came from and so I tore through the book and try to find it I couldn’t I eventually had to give up on some of those quotes because I didn’t write down page number the first time so make sure you do that’s really really important okay three ways to integrate a source into your paper. Find  out about quotes and how to use them on Edusson.

The first is quotation this is where as you probably know you’re using the exact words from the source if you need to make a couple of little changes for grammar and you can do that there’s different ways to show that in different documentation style so basically you’re using the exact same words from the quote and you’re enclosing them in quotation marks the second way here is paraphrasing in this case the ideas or the concepts are from the source but you put the words in the sentence structure are your own so you’re not just going through and changing the words that you actually significantly changing the way that it’s written but you’re keeping the same idea you’re not changing or misrepresenting what the original author said and then the third one here is summary this one is similar to a paraphrase because you are putting it in your own words but here you’re only getting the main points a summary is shorter than the original text.

So if you write a summary of a whole book it might be a you know a section of your paper if you write a summary of a like a chapter it might be a paragraph if you read a summary of a paragraph there might be one sentence so it’s always going to be shorter than the original okay how not to paraphrase unfortunately this is how a lot of people paraphrase this is not a good idea we will choose a sentence that sounds good and think okay I want to put that in the paper I’m going to try to paraphrase it then we will keep the book open on their desk and they’ll keep looking back and forth from the book or the journal articles to to their tutor paper to their screen and they’ll try to look up a synonym for every word and maybe they’ll right-click on it and microsoft word and think like you know okay I don’t want to use the word man so I’m going to use the word male instead and we’ll go through with every word and they’ll try to change it like that this is not a good way to paraphrase the first thing is that it takes forever you can imagine if you have to go word by words read a sentence and look up a synonym for every word it’s going to take forever secondly you’re probably going to end up with awkward wording.
